Frankenstein: Futures End

I remember being rather excited for Futures End weekly and enjoying at least first half of it. Then it collapsed and had one of the weirder non-endings. But sometimes series reads better on a second go.

Not this one. Heck, I'd probably argue that it reads even worse on a second go. But we are here to talk about Frank and not the series itself.

So, what about Frank? Like every other weekly this one has a core of characters that we follow and Frank with Amethyst are one of them. But unlike others, their story is rather isolated from the main story so they have to deal with less bullshit. I assume that this section of the weekly was mostly written by Lemire because it works well with his Agent of Shade run.

Basic idea is that someone blew up Stormwatch's spaceship and Shade sends Frank, Amethyst and Ray Palmer to investigate what happened. During the investigation Frank loses his arm and Ray Palmer figures that the best thing to do is to attach to him Hawkman's arm. Don't worry, Hawkman was dead at the time. And well turns out that Nth metal in the arm starts "healing" Frank.

But humanity comes at a price and Frank ends up mortally wounded in a battle. Before all that there are some fun action and I think that his friendship with Amethyst was well done as well. There also are some Father Time and Ray Palmer bits in this story. And Ray Palmer's development is probably my only real negative with Frank's plot. But I think that at some point I'll write something about both of these characters so their developments will probably be more relevant there than here.

In the end this timeline never came to be, but it works fine for me as "the last" Frank's story. And it would easily make my headcanon list that I did in one of my earlier posts. Sadly this story is not good enough to justify reading the entire Futures End weekly only to get few good pages every now and then.

Years ago fans of 52 weekly "remixed" it by dividing it into different "books", focusing either on one character or theme. Recently DC did it themselves for Black Adam due to his movie adaptation. Sadly Futures End is not popular (for objective reasons) and Frank isn't getting a blockbuster movie.

Would be cool if some fans made an edit that has only Frank's bits. Or maybe upcoming Creature Commandos animated show will be a big hit and DC will collect it themselves. Or maybe nothing will happen.
